The ability to identify and manage significant risks is an essential leadership skill and a key element in effective NHS governance.

Failure to anticipate and control risks can have devastating effects for individual patients and their families, cause distress to staff involved, and undermine public confidence in the NHS.

With the introduction of the landmark Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, organisations will now be held criminally liable for fatal health and safety breaches. The organisation’s attitude to health and safety, and its risk systems, policies and practices will be scrutinised by a jury in order to determine the extent of its wrongdoing.

Given their level of responsibility, it is an alarming fact that few people in leadership roles have had specific training in the effective management of risk.

“Management of Risk and Uncertainty in the Health Sector” addresses this skills need for Board members and senior managers working in the NHS.
